Victoria - Unfair comparison / Die Siegessäule - ein unfairer Vergleich

Ever since I was in Berlin last year, I wished for a better image of the Victoria monument.

Although initally a symbol of prussian militarism, later a symbol for the unification of Germany, for me it is, glittering in the sun, a symbol of peaceful welcome.

I had captured it with my Olympus XZ-1 at full tele and then cropped to 100%. In the meantime, I bought my Sony Nex 5N as well as a collection of legacy Canon FD lenses. Thus armed to the teeth :-), I had another go this year. The weather was not as fine, but the pictures speak for themselves.

First XZ1 (100%), then 5N with FD 80-200/4 at <200mm, f8 (36%, downscaled to 90%), then with SEL50F18 (78%). Please keep in mind that the 50mm lens on the 5N is equivalent only to 75mm, whereas the 24mm on the XZ1 is equivalent to 112 mm. So the 5N is disadvantaged with this lens, but still delivers better image quality.

So though cropping sometimes helps, there really is no replacement for having the right focal length lens with you.

Olympus XZ-1 @ 24mm (= 112 mm)

Nex 5N with FD 80-200mm/4 @ about 140mm, f8, cropped to 35%, then downscaled to 90%

Nex 5N with SEL50f18, crop to 78%
